Copy & Linediting with Erika Steeves

My style of editing is a combination of line and copyediting in one service. Sometimes these two services constitute different full rounds of editing (especially within traditional publishing), but I like to offer a blend in one package for my clients. This makes it easier to move your story forward in a timely fashion while still getting the benefit of someone checking that all the technical details are correct. Also includes a style sheet.

Copyediting includes:

  • Making sure everything is as consistent and clear as possible. I will flag and query narrative inconsistencies.
  • Checking your spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but also making sure all the technicalities of capitalization, abbreviations, hyphenation, and numbers are consistent and in line with publishing standards (for fiction thatโ€™s the Chicago Manual of Style).

Line editing includes:

  • Making note of any point of view issues (like head hopping).
  • Offering suggestions for removing excess filter/filler words or stage direction.
  • Checking dialogue formatting and tagging + solid action beats.
  • Looking for variety in sentence length and rhythm.
  • Flagging any clunky or unclear sentences.
