Copy & Linediting with Erika Steeves
My style of editing is a combination of line and copyediting in one service. Sometimes these two services constitute different full rounds of editing (especially within traditional publishing), but I like to offer a blend in one package for my clients. This makes it easier to move your story forward in a timely fashion while still getting the benefit of someone checking that all the technical details are correct. Also includes a style sheet.
Copyediting includes:
- Making sure everything is as consistent and clear as possible. I will flag and query narrative inconsistencies.
- Checking your spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but also making sure all the technicalities of capitalization, abbreviations, hyphenation, and numbers are consistent and in line with publishing standards (for fiction that’s the Chicago Manual of Style).
Line editing includes:
- Making note of any point of view issues (like head hopping).
- Offering suggestions for removing excess filter/filler words or stage direction.
- Checking dialogue formatting and tagging + solid action beats.
- Looking for variety in sentence length and rhythm.
- Flagging any clunky or unclear sentences.
