**Banning knowledge...**
[PEN America has reported that book bans are increasingly including Nonfiction titles](https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/libraries/article/100342-book-bans-increasingly-target-nonfiction-pen-america-reports.html) in the latest study produced by PEN's Freedom to Read program, according to *Publishers Weekly*. Violence (non-sexual) was the most common banned topic, followed by "death and grief" then "self-esteem and empowerment." The percentage of targeted books by or about BIPOC or LGBTQ+ authors and subjects also both increased dramatically.

**Recognizing courage...**
[The British Book Awards 2026 Freedom to Publish prize has been won jointly by Sarah Wynn-Williams and the late Virginia Giuffre](https://www.theguardian.com/books/2026/may/11/sarah-wynn-williams-and-virginia-giuffre-jointly-win-freedom-to-publish-prize-at-british-book-awards) for their memoirs, reports *The Guardian*. This is the first time the prize, created in 2022 to call attention to risks taken by writers and publishers and to celebrate those who resist suppression, has been awarded to more than one recipient.

**Canadian poetry contest...**
The [CBC Poetry Prize](https://www.cbc.ca/books/literaryprizes/cbc-poetry-prize-1.4090929) is accepting entries from April 1 to June 1st, offering Canadian poets the opportunity to win $6000 from the Canada Council for the Arts, a two-week writing residency, and publication on CBC Books.
